Barely a month after lawyers paralysed Bangalore city, they find themselves in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons once again. This time, the advocates have been involved in a physical altercation with media personnel in the city's civil court in the Majestic area of Bangalore.
Whereas the exact reason for the altercation remains unclear, sources have stated it all started with a dispute between the lawyers and the media persons who were there to cover Janardhan Reddy's court appearance. The large number of media persons were allegedly making it difficult for the lawyers to enter the civil court complex and hence the lawyers requested the police to intervene.
In between, the lawyers also asked the media persons to clear the way and a verbal duel followed. Tensions gradually escalated and the situation turned worse as the police was forced to intervene. There are reports that individuals within the court complex began throwing stones on the crowd below.
Perhaps smarting from the earlier clash between the police and lawyers, the policemen allegedly used tear gas on the lawyers and also fired shots in the air. There are some reports that the lawyers were chased back into the court complex by the police while others say that severalcars were set ablaze by lawyers. Others say that several lawyers were unfairly attacked by the police and that police personnel even beat up a judge.
An eye witness to the incident tells Bar & Bench that the police forced the advocates to stay within the court premises and then proceeded to beat them up, all the time saying that it was time they [the police] taught the lawyers a lesson.
Sources also say that the situation was eventually placed under control when the Chief Justice of Karantaka and Justice K. L. Manjunath arrived at the court complex to assess the situation. It is said that it was the presence of these judges which eventually brought the situation back to normal.
The unfortunate incident has resulted in injuries being suffered by journalists, police personnel and even lawyers. As per a source at the State Bar Council, one lawyer is currently in coma.
Srinivasa Babu L, Vice-Chairman of Karnataka State Bar Council speaking to Bar & Bench said, “I am currently at the hospital to take care of attacked lawyers. Lawyers were severely injured. This was not highlighted. We do not know the exact numbers as the police did not let us into the place of attack. The total area is surrounded by police.”
Srinivasa is of the view that the clash was a result of some people misbehaving while falsely pretending to be lawyers. “More than a 100 lawyers are admitted in various hospitals,” he adds and also says that there is a pressing need for a “judicial enquiry in this regard.”
The latest incident reflects the mounting tensions between the police and lawyers and also raises question on the manner in which the media has portrayed the legal fraternity. Whether the “judicial enquiry” will reveal the true facts behind this ugly episode is something which remains to be seen.

March 9, 2012 - 1:03pmPrint and visual media are new generation goondas and extortionist. You don't agree or bow down anD they will not leave a single Stone unturned to malign your image. Police n politicians are part ofTheir team members and hence one should not expect any support From them. We all know that half of print n visual media Are owned or feeded by one large political party. Its high timeTo show these team of thugs the strenght of lawyers. I beleiev Barring this team, only lawyers are capable to give a fitting answer To these bunch of goondas. Aam admi suffers extortion from printMedia but is always helpless. We, the lawyers fraternity will have fight For justice of the citizens. Indian media is in very bad shape And neeeds some corrective medicines. We Should start a national levelAgitiation against these bunch of jokers.

March 2, 2012 - 11:57pmmedia is solely responsible for today's state of affairs. it is not only today's incident but there are many instances which compelled various quarters of society to face bitterness. media has lost all its fairness to bring the truth to society and is concentrating only on extortion and coercion by indulging into false propaganda. if media thinks they have pen and paper and hence can write anything according to their wince and fancy, then its high time to show them what we (judicial fraternity) could do with their (bar and the bench) pen and paper.

March 3, 2012 - 12:36amBan the entry of media and police to court premise and vidhan soudha- every problems will be solvedWho will show/broadcast the bad acts of media/tv channels?Thank you for being the voice of lawyers. Also thanks to the media/tv channels who publish/broadcast the real stories and creates awareness in people and bring justice to public. At the same time, we shall also blame the many media/tv channels for not showing the actual story. These media, tv channels etc will start the morning with astrology spoiling the persons mood every day and end with the crime stories in the evening. many news channels today established only with the profit motive. they threaten to broadcast n make money. it is not the lawyers who were holding vidio cameras during these incidents, it is the journalist/reporters holding it and broadcasting the news in their favor. why not media bring real picture to the public? why they hide the truth? why the truth not be lawyers being attacked by the media and police. Why the tv channels make the small issue a big? why the media is playing with persons privacy? Why the tv channels show only injured journalists and why not the lawyers who are dead and injured in the incident?

March 3, 2012 - 10:46amThank you bar and bench for carrying a sane and unbiased article in the face of some really appalling journalism...... Like Mr Raghavendara, I am in constant touch with my colleagues who were stuck in Civil Court all day while atrocious acts have been committed by the police. There are numerous videos available (already uploaded on social networking sites i.e. facebook) which clearly show the police setting fire on vehicles and damaging them along with indiscriminately beating up of advocates (lathi on the head - while the police is authorised to only hit below the knee during a lathicharge).A classmate and colleague who we all know to be a docile person was dragged out of the ambulance and beaten up black and blue, when he was already bleeding from the head.THIS IS THE STARK REALITY FROM GROUND ZERO!!! NOT WHAT THE MEDIA IS PORTRAYING!!!!!!
