Our Lordships flew for just Rs 140 crore when the Presidents trip cost Rs 205 crore

The President of India, Pratibha Patil’s foreign visits has cost the exchequer a whopping Rs. 205 crore, a figure which makes what has been spent by the judges of our Supreme Court seem like a trifling sum indeed. Bar & Bench has obtained exclusive information pertaining to expenses incurred on air-travel by the judges of the Supreme Court.

The response to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Bar & Bench’s Associate Editor, Raghul Sudheesh has provided some interesting data. The application sought information on the monthly expenditure and individual expenditure for each judge on flight travel for the time period 2007-2012.

The response received however included only a year wise break-up of the expenses.

The RTI reply stated that, “The expenses for all the Judges, including that of Judges who might have retired during the relevant years is incurred from the Financial Head of ‘Foreign Travel Expenses’. The detailed break-up is not held in the manner sought by you”.

Further the reply stated, “In so far as the data regarding expenditure incurred on flight travel per Hon’ble Judge for the period 2007-2012 is concerned, the nature of information sought involves examination and perusal of the records of almost five years manually which will involve installation of all staff available in the concerned section and other resources. The whole process would be detrimental to the day to day working of the concerned sections. Therefore, you may, if so advised, inspect personally only part of the record requested, after severance of the record containing information which is exempted from disclosure’.

Justice K. G. Balakrishnan served as the Chief Justice of India from January 14, 2007 till May 12, 2010 after which Justice S. H. Kapadia took over as the Chief Justice of India. It will be interesting to note that while our Lordships flew for more than Rs. 1 crore during Justice Balakrishnan’s tenure of three years, the judges in Kapadia's court spent a mere Rs. 22 lakhs in two years.

"The President of India, Pratibha Patil’s foreign visits has cost the exchequer a whopping Rs. 205 crore, a trifling amount when compared to what has been spent by the judges of our Supreme Court." Don't understand how 250 crore can be "a trifling amount" when compared to 1.4 crore.

I dont know why media is getting so irresponsible, just want to create some sensation. She is THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA, she wont go in a Martui Car or Economy Class "Go Indigo Flight". Irrespective of her calibre, when you are representing India there needs to be a maintained standard and also there are so many things attached to this cost, air-plane fuel etc etc. People stop cribbing, you yourself don't do any thing to elect people and cry like babies. Sitting at home and supporting Anna or Swamy wont help. . And if you want a comparison since media is not doing its job, I ll do it.Since you love comparing to US and Obama "Bhai-sahab" so much these are his expenses for just one trip http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2075958/Obamas-annual-holiday-Ha..... And please SC Judges and President of a Country ????Good day

@Lawyer, New Delhi - Media is not being irresponsible here, the President is. Agreed that she is the President of the country that doesn't give her the right to waste money which could well go to serve the more than 700million poor Indians who get ignored. You don't need to take your family and friends to foreign countries on state visits. Indian politicians need to learn from politicians of some of the western countries who don't only try to be as transparent as they can in their work and conduct but also speak to the general public and understand the problems. How many times have you seen any Indian politician speaking to the people of its constituency on a day to day basis?

Why is this such a big issue? President is head of the state- needs to make many more trips in India and around the globe - she is just doing her job- there is a department that sets her budget. Judges sit in the court mostly and don't need to travel around. Don't waste your mind and time debating over things that are not fruitful

Please present a comparison in Price of Petrol in India vs Crude Oil Per Barrel, Rupee vs Dollar and Expenses of MP and Cabinet for a period between 2007 to 2012. Maybe this will enlighten the people of India to bring out another revolution like that of 1857. Maybe Nationalism and sense of Right will prevail.
