Survey on the liberalisation of the Indian legal market

As we had stated last week, the never-ending debate over the entry of foreign law firms is one which has multiple stakeholders. Some of the more vocal ones such as SILF, BCI and the Law Ministry have made their opinions, of which there is considerable diversity, well known. However there are some groups whose opinion has either been drowned out in the bedlam or not heard at all; we called them the Silent Stakeholders.

These Silent Stakeholders include young lawyers, fresh law graduates and law students. It has often been said that one of the principal benefits of liberalisation of the Indian legal market is the possible employment opportunities foreign law firms will bring to the table. At the same time, there are those who argue that before any talk of entry, there must be first a level playing field and of course a reciprocal arrangement with other countries. Curiously enough, in both the scenarios, it is the young lawyers and fresh graduates who will be impacted the most. Yet, their opinion rarely enters the debate.

And it is precisely to collect this opinion, the viewpoint of these Silent Stakeholders that we bring to you our first survey. We sincerely hope that you will make your voice heard.

Of course, the survey is not limited to these Silent Stakeholders alone. We have devised questions which are not only meant to gauge the mood of young lawyers and law students but also that of individuals who have been in the profession for a long time.

The 9-question survey covers a broad range of topics relating to the liberlisation of Indian legal market.

Like always, we are grateful for your thoughts, comments and suggestions and look forward to your patronage.

This survey is totally rigged. I am 100% in support of liberalisation, but the survey forces me to tick options which say that there are concerns if the market if liberalised. I think there are no concerns, but the survey wil not accept no for an answer. I think the survey is a ploy funded by the anti-liberalisation lobby to show that evn young lawyers have expressed concerns over liberalisation.

Good point. My answers to some of the question were "this is NOT a concern". I'm forced to tick "this is a minimal concern". I don't know how many responses you've received B&B, but is it possible to add a new column saying - "this is NOT a concern"?

@Aa: We assure you that there is no "rigging" involved in the survey. Nor is it a "ploy funded by the anti-liberalisation lobby". Thank you for taking the survey.@Boo: Thank you for taking the survey. Afraid it may not be possible to add a new option given the number of responses already received.
