Why foreign law firms should setup shop in India

The never-ending debate about the entry of foreign law firms into India is again in the news. Financial Express spoke to BCI Chairman, Gopal Subramanium, Som Mandal, Ranji Dua and Former Supreme Court Bar Association President M.N. Krishnamani and Diljeet Titus about the opening up of the legal sector.

To reduce delays, SC will send notice on email

The Times of India has reported the Supreme Court’s decision to email notices in addition to notices sent via registered post with acknowledgement due. This was decided by a Bench comprising of Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia, Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Swatanter Kumar and will be on an experimental basis to reduce the delay in the traditional method of serving notices. Attorney general G.E. Vahanvati and Senior Advocate Harish Salve also favoured this decision.

Record disposal of cases by Judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court and Orissa High Court

The Hindu has reported Justice Tamada Gopala Krishna in a record breaking feat of delivering justice to 93 criminal cases in a single day. He was awarded by the Lok Nayak Foundation on July 25. A concurring scenario was reported by the Times of India where 328 motor vehicle accident claims were decided in a single day at a Lok Adalat in the District Court of Cuttack. The Judges of the Orissa High Court, Justice R.N. Biswal together with Justice Laxmikanta Mohapatra settled the claims regarding insurance companies in these cases.

If you conduct a poll I think you will find that most people support liberalisation. A lobby of corrupt oligarchs is spearheading the movement against foreign law firms and many legal websites lack the guts to criticise them.
