The Supreme Court has ruled that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has the authority to direct investigation pertaining to fair trade practices, but its directions cannot be challenged before the Competition Appellate Tribunal (COMPAT).

In a major blow to British telecom major Vodafone, the Bombay High Court today, dismissed its petition questioning the IT department’s jurisdiction in the ongoing tax battle. A Division Bench consisting of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and J.P. Devadhar while dismissing their petition said, “The IT authority's order can’t be held to lack jurisdiction.”

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has decided to discontinue with the current system of granting permanent approval to law colleges across India. In its new decision, it affirmatively wants law colleges to apply each academic year for a fresh approval from the BCI, in order to run the legal education institutions.

The Supreme Court yesterday referred the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Act, 2010 to a constitutional bench saying that its judicial validity needs to be examined in greater detail. A bench headed by Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia which included Justices K.S. Radhakrishnan and Swatanter Kumar held that since the Constitution has been amended to accomodate the Act, the matter needs to decided by a larger bench.
