The Gujarat National Law University at Gandhinagar has collaborated with the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) to set up a Maritime Laws and Practices Chair at the university..According to a press release, the Chair has received an endowment for a 3-year period, till October 2018..This is the seventh research Chair established at the University, with the other six including a Ministry of Earth Sciences Chair, a Khaitan & Co Chair for Mergers & Acquisitions, and an ONGC Chair for International Contracts..Speaking to Bar & Bench, Assistant Professor Dr. Joshua Aston said that the Maritime Chair aims to provide a forum for research and study on international and national maritime laws and policies..Dr. Aston elaborated on the activities the Chair intends to undertake..“The appointed faculty, along with the student research group action member will carry out research and training in the areas of Maritime Law and Law of the Sea. The Chair will conduct activities like essay competitions, public lectures, seminars, conferences, moot court competitions etc.”.It also plans to encourage doctoral research, and arrange internships and placements for students interested in this niche field of law..“There will be doctoral internships at the Gujarat Maritime Board’s head office in Gandhinagar. The students will have to undertake research and make reports. We plan to collaborate with GMB to add more activities for students down the road.”.GNLU has been introducing a number of such initiatives in the recent past. In September this year, it launched the GNLU Litigation Assistance and Support Scholarship (GLASS) to incentivise a career in litigation.
