Know Your Campus Ambassador: Purbayan Chakraborty, KSLU

Over the last two years, we have built a network of Campus Ambassadors across more than fifty law schools all over India. These law students have been providing us with information on campus events and activities, and also sharing legal articles.

This series of interviews is meant to turn the spotlight on these hardworking and dedicated individuals.

In this edition, we speak with Purbayan Chakraborty, a fourth -year student at the Karnataka State Law University

Why did you choose to study law?

I scored pretty well in science in my 10th board exam. My family thought I was born to be a great engineer. But it took less than a month into my 11th to realise that science was not my cup of tea.

This is when I was told by one of my cousins who was working at a top tire law firm that I could peruse law as it throws open well-paying opportunities after graduation.

Like any other child, I had the desire to be successful and society had taught me well that success is understood in terms of how much I earn. So I was convinced that law was the only option for me after 12th.

What made you apply for the Campus Ambassador post at Bar & Bench?

I have been following Bar and Bench ever since I joined law school. I have been a beneficiary of their free service for almost four years now. So when I read about the Bar and Bench’s Campus Ambassador program, I thought this could be an opportunity for me to work with the organisation I admire so much and also to say thanks to Bar and Bench through whatever small ways I can contribute to the organisation for their incalculable constant service.

What are your plans after completing law?

When I joined law the idea was to get into a top tire law firm and make a lot of money. But one of my seniors in my law school changed my entire perspective about life.

He taught me that life is not just about business or money but it is about people too.

I learnt how law can be used as a powerful instrument to bring about a positive change in the society. Ever since then I have dedicated all my time in law school to make myself competent enough to give a good representation to the poor and vulnerable in court of law.

I wish to pursue a career in pro bono Human Rights litigation after my graduation.
