The past Sunday saw a violent clash between students within the campus premises of the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (NUJS).  The confrontation, which took place between students from NUJS and those from the neighboring National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), has resulted in at least two students requiring immediate medical care.

According to student witnesses, the clash was a result of water balloons being thrown into the NIFT campus by NUJS students from the boy’s hostel. This was also accompanied by the passing of lewd comments by NUJS students.  As a result, 20-odd students from NIFT entered the NUJS campus and boy’s hostel building. Subsequently, violence broke out in the hostel with one student receiving a head injury and another suffering from a fracture.

More details about this incident remain hard to come by, with all the concerned authorities in a “meeting” at the time of going to press. This incident, serious as it, highlights the need for a look at the manner in which discipline has been maintained within the Kolkata-based law school. Several students have said that this is not the first time such an incident has taken place and that there has been a perceptible decline in disciplinary levels at the institute.
