Webinar Alert: Kurian Joseph J. on the significance of Constitutional Values (Dec 27)

LEX MACULA is a registered NGO under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. We are a youth organisation specializing in organizing moot courts, debates, seminars and other legal competitions for a much better learning experience than what is offered to the law students.

The topic for discussion is ‘Significance of Constitutional Values in the 21st Century’. As we come toward the end of 2020, India has faced many constitutional conundrums over the last few years, some exasperated by the pandemic and some otherwise, in this current climate it becomes increasingly important to recognise our constitutional values laid down by the Constitutional Assembly and their importance in this century.

Hon’ble Mr Justice Kurian Joseph was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on 8th March 2013. He retired on 29th November 2018. He began his legal career when he graduated from the Kerala Law Academy in 1978 with an LL.B. While a student, he was the General Secretary of the Kerala University Union (1978). He formally began his legal practice in 1979 in the High Court of Kerala. Within 10 years, he was appointed as Government Pleader.

He was named as the Additional Advocate General in 1994 and was designated as Senior Advocate in 1996. Four years later, Justice Joseph was elevated as a Judge, High Court of Kerala. Justice Joseph served as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala twice and was subsequently appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh from 2010 to 2013. On 8th March 2013, he was nominated to serve as a Justice on the Supreme Court of India.

He has always been a guardian to protect the independence of the judiciary and while speaking on his retirement, Justice Joseph publicly vowed to not accept any post-retirement offices, citing the importance of maintaining the independence of the judiciary.
