  • Harpreet Mansukhani vs Election Commission of India

Item 46 in Court 1  – W.P.(C) No. 364/2019

Bench: CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna

This is a petition seeking directions to be issued to the Election Commission (EC) to take action against political party representatives and spokespersons who make speeches or remarks on religious or caste lines.

The EC told the Court yesterday that its powers in this regard are limited. The Court will examine the scope of the powers of the EC in this regard.

Today in Court:  The Court said that no further action was necessary as EC has taken action it considered appropriate.

The petition has been filed by a Muslim couple seeking a declaration that the prohibition on entry of Muslim women into mosques in India is illegal and unconstitutional for being violative of Articles 14, 15, 21, 25 and 29 of the Constitution.

The case pertains to Daiichi Sankyo’s execution petition pursuant to an arbitral award for the recovery of Rs. 3500 crore from former Ranbaxy promoters Malvinder and Shivinder Singh.

Today in Court: The Court directed Luxury Farms Ltd and RC Nursery Ltd, two companies indirectly held by the Singh brothers, not to transfer, dispose of or create any third party rights in the assets.
