Collegium recommends 4 Additional Judges of Calcutta HC as Permanent Judges; Term of 1 Additional Judge proposed to be extended

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of four additional judges of the Calcutta High Court as permanent judges. Further, it is also proposed that the term of another additional judge of the High Court be extended by six months from May.

The proposal has been made by way of two Collegium Statements issued on April 6. By one statement, it has been recommended that additional judges, Biswajit Basu, Amrita Sinha and Jay Sengupta be made permanent judges of the High Court.

The same statement also intimates the proposal of the Collegium to extend the term of additional judge, Abhijit Gangopadhyay for another six months with effect from May 2, 2020.

All four judges were appointed to the Calcutta High Court in April 2018. They were sworn in as judges of the High Court in May 2018.

By a second statement issued the same day, the Collegium has endorsed the appointment of additional judge, Madhumati Mitra as a permanent judge. Justice Mitra was sworn in as a High Court judge in October 2018.
