Jindal Global Law School is hosting a virtual lecture on "GLOBALISATION OF CASTE AND INDIAN DIASPORA" by Dr Gajendran Ayyathurai (PhD Columbia University). He teaches and researches at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies Gottingen University, Germany.

About the Speaker

Dr Gajendran Ayyathurai teaches and researches at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies, Gottingen University, Germany. He has published on the culture, memory, and history of the casteless Tamils/Indians in Tamil, English, and German. And he has initiated a new subfield, Critical Caste Studies, with scholars from India, Europe, and North America. His forthcoming book is titled, Deep Resistance: Buddhism, Caste, and the Marginalized in Colonial India.

Abstract

Caste is a global problem now. In this presentation, I analyze the possible linkages between religion-cultural establishments and the emergence of state-supported global Brahminism. In addition, I examine whether there are linkages between caste-based religion-cultural foundations and academic theory and practice of South Asian Studies abroad. Such developments, I argue, are due more to the civil societal, state, and academic normativization and naturalization of caste in North America and Europe, as is the case in India.
