Center for Human Rights Studies launched at SRM School of Law

Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Justice V Ramasubramanian, launched the Centre for Human Rights Studies at SRM School of Law, Kattankulathur, on July 25, 2026.

The launch took place during SRM School of Law's Induction Programme 2026, which welcomed the incoming batch of students and brought together legal luminaries, university leadership, faculty members, parents, and aspiring law students.

Justice Ramasubramanian also launched the Centre for International Humanitarian Law and Refugee Law.

In his keynote address, Justice Ramasubramanian urged students to approach the legal profession with integrity, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to lifelong learning. Reflecting on his own journey as a first generation lawyer, he encouraged students to believe in the transformative power of hard work and resilience.

He shared an anecdote to explain why the world needs lawyers, illustrating how legal professionals apply logic, interpret the law, resolve complex human conflicts, and uphold justice, and reminded students that while legal knowledge can be taught, qualities such as ethical conduct, compassion, analytical thinking, and emotional intelligence define exceptional lawyers.

He also encouraged students to embrace every learning opportunity with sincerity, noting that legal education extends beyond the classroom into every aspect of life and society.

Additional Solicitor General of India ARL Sundaresan spoke about the responsibility that accompanies the legal profession, emphasising discipline, integrity, and professionalism, and encouraged students to build careers founded on ethical values.

Prof. YSR Murthy, Pro Vice Chancellor (Law), SRMIST, welcomed the new students and their families and reaffirmed the institution's vision of nurturing future judges, advocates, corporate leaders, policymakers, and legal scholars through a multidisciplinary, research driven, and practice oriented legal education.

Vivek Sriram, Partner at Khaitan & Co, Chennai, encouraged students to approach legal education with curiosity, resilience, and an open mind. He spoke about exploring diverse career opportunities, making effective use of internships, strengthening communication and writing skills, and developing clarity of thought, and advised students not to fear failure, to identify their areas of interest with patience, and to cultivate professionalism, adaptability, and meaningful professional relationships.

SRM School of Law welcomed nearly 350 new students this year across its B.A.LL.B. (Hons.), B.Com.LL.B. (Hons.), B.B.A.LL.B. (Hons.), and LL.B. (Hons.) programmes, along with its LL.M. programme offering specialisations in Corporate Law, Cyber Law and Security, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, and International Trade Law and Intellectual Property Rights.
