CJI Surya Kant to attend NLSIU convocation on October 17

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant will attend the 34th convocation of National Law School of India University (NLSIU) on October 17.

The University's Executive Council and General Council approved the new date on Wednesday following weeks of uncertainty over whether the ceremony, originally scheduled for September 12, would be held at all.

The convocation was cancelled in August after graduating students rejected a demand to issue a public statement inviting the CJI to the ceremony. It later emerged that the demand came days after students had already agreed to a convocation with the CJI present.

More than 700 current and former NLSIU students had objected to the CJI and Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra attending the ceremony. The objection followed the BCI's August 13 decisions to halt and, within hours, restore enrolment for NALSAR Hyderabad's graduating batch over its own objection to CJI Kant's presence at its convocation.

NLSIU later cancelled the convocation before deciding that it will hold the same with the CJI being present.

Students have the option to obtain their degrees at the convocation or in-absentia.
