Clash at DU's Law Centre-1 during DUSU campaigning leaves students injured

Clashes broke out at Delhi University's Law Centre-1 on Wednesday - the final day of campaigning for the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections - leaving students injured.

According to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the clash broke out outside Law Centre-1 after an argument over the removal of campaign banners. The organisation said three of its members were injured, two with head wounds and one with a fractured hand.

DCP (North) Niharika Bhatt of Delhi Police described it as a minor verbal altercation and scuffle between two groups of students that broke out around 5 PM/

According to sources, the disruption also extended to Umang Bhawan and the Campus Law Centre. Heavy police barricading was reported through the area, stretching from Kirori Mal College towards Chhatra Marg. Sources also said that the old Faculty of Law premises were cleared as a precaution.

Reportedly, ABVP has also alleged that one of its members suffered a "life-threatening attack" outside Law Centre-1. It claimed involvement of individuals linked to the Congress, the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI).

The clashes came the same day the Delhi High Court disposed of a plea challenging the ongoing DUSU election process over alleged political party interference. The Court held that a candidate's membership in a political party's student wing is not by itself a ground for disqualification. It cautioned University and election authorities to keep the polls free of party interference.

An IA in Prashant Manchanda v Union of India and Ors. related to Wednesday's violence is listed for an urgent hearing before the Delhi High Court at 2:30 PM today.
