Former Supreme Court Justice Abhay S Oka joins PGCL as Professor of Practice

Justice Abhay S Oka served as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, then as a Supreme Court judge until his retirement on May 24, 2025.

Former Supreme Court Justice Abhay S Oka has joined SVKM Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Mumbai (PGCL) as an Honorary Professor of Practice.

Justice Oka will give lectures on constitutional law, procedural laws, and jurisprudence from his authored judgements to encourage students to join litigation.

Speaking on the appointment PGCL Principal Prof (Dr) Navashikha Duara said,

"The engagement of Justice Shri Abhay Oka as Professor of Practice will meaningfully bridge the gap between legal theory and practice. The association will enable a model of experiential academic leadership, enriching students’ understanding of law’s lived realities and strengthening the institution’s commitment to excellence in legal education. Justice Oka’s extensive judicial experience, deep understanding of constitutional and procedural law, and contributions to jurisprudence will provide invaluable insights to curriculum design and delivery. It will also enhance teaching, mentorship, research, and overall institutional development."

Justice Oka was appointed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court on November 12, 2005.

He was appointed Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in April 2019, until his elevation to the Supreme Court in August 2021. He demitted office as an apex court judge on May 24, 2025.

Earlier this year, former Chief Justices of India DY Chandrachud, and Sanjiv Khanna joined National Law University, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla as Distinguished Professors respectively.
