

The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, has appointed Professor Indranath Gupta as the Dean of the School of Law.
Professor Gupta brings over 18 years of experience spanning higher education, legal scholarship, institutional governance, policy research, and litigation. An expert in Technology Law, Information Technology Law, Data Protection, and Intellectual Property Law, he assumes office with a record of academic leadership and international collaborations.
Before joining SRMIST, Professor Gupta held several key leadership positions at OP Jindal Global University (JGU). He served as Professor at the Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), Dean of the Office of Data, Innovation and Technology, and Director of the Jindal Initiative on Research in IP and Competition (JIRICO). His contributions to institutional governance also included serving as Controller of Examinations and Dean of Research, where he played a role in strengthening academic systems, research excellence, and digital innovation.
Professor Gupta was awarded the European Union Jean Monnet Chair, serving as the Academic Coordinator for the internationally funded project, Multi-dimensional Approaches to the Understanding of the EU Data Protection Framework (2020–2023).
His global academic engagements include appointments as a Jean Monnet Visiting Research Fellow at Bournemouth University, United Kingdom, and as a research collaborator with Università Bocconi, Milan, on a European Commission-funded research project under the Seventh Framework Programme.
Over the years, Professor Gupta has led numerous high-impact research and consultancy projects funded by globally renowned organizations. These include research on data protection compliance for health applications funded by the Thakur Foundation (USA), studies on intermediary liability and freedom of speech for Facebook (USA), standard development and patent law research for Qualcomm Inc. (USA), and online data compliance frameworks for Brunel University London.
His scholarly contributions have earned him several recognitions, including the Asia Privacy Awards (India Chapter) and the Best Privacy Author Award conferred by Tsaaro in 2023.
Professor Gupta has also collaborated extensively with Springer, contributing to several publications. His latest work, the Handbook on Originality in Copyright: Cases and Materials, is currently available as a Living Edition on SpringerLink, serving as a significant global reference in copyright scholarship.
As per a press release, Professor Gupta's appointment is expected to further strengthen SRMIST's vision of establishing the School of Law as a leading centre for interdisciplinary legal education, cutting-edge research, innovation, and global academic partnerships. His leadership is expected to accelerate the School's engagement with emerging legal challenges in the rapidly evolving domains of technology, artificial intelligence, data governance, cybersecurity, and intellectual property.
