School of Law, SGT University has announced the Ram Behari Gupta Memorial National Civil Drafting Competition 2026.
Centered on the intricate realities and evolving dimensions of property disputes across urban and rural landscapes, the competition challenges participants to move beyond rigid, formulaic technical formats and step directly into the role of active litigation strategists.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION
Unlike conventional legal drafting exercises that mandate a single, predetermined procedural path, this competition simulates contemporary civil court practice under the Specific Relief Act, 1963 and the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.
The competition rigorously tests a participant’s ability to analyze disputed property transaction timelines, evaluate readiness and willingness, balance primary claims for specific performance with connected remedies of declaration and injunction, and strategically plead alternative claims for monetary compensation or recovery of damages.
By requiring comprehensive, balanced pleadings for both the Plaintiff and the Defendant alongside an overarching Procedural Strategy Memorandum the event bridges classroom legal theory with the high-stakes demands of actual civil trial practice.
This year edition is organised in memoriam of Late Ram Behari Gupta, Advocate, honouring his legacy and impact on legal education and civil law practice.
THEME: Law of Specific Performance and other connected Relief of Declaration/Injunction and alternative Relief of Recovery of Damages under Specific Relief Act, 1963 in matters of disputes relating to both urban and rural properties.
The theme of the competition explores the intricate nature involving equities and private prescriptive claims within the rapidly expanding urban landscapes. Participants will navigate a realistic fictional scenario tracking the direct conflict between longstanding private Easementary rights and modern commercial redevelopment projects backed by formal municipal sanctions.
The factual matrix will be engineered to test traditional civil legal remedies including declaratory relief, permanent injunction, mandatory injunctions, and temporary injunctions, and civil damages under the contemporary pressures of urban growth.
Through this investigative prism, participants must balance and evaluate complex trial litigation factors such as the adequacy of alternative access routes, the evidentiary weight of conflicting municipal records, the doctrines of delay and acquiescence, and the strategic configuration of interim versus final reliefs.
