The Alumni Association of National Law University, Jodhpur (NLU Jodhpur), recently came together to offer career guidance to fourth and fifth students at the University.

Given the myriad career opportunities open to students after studying law, the Association recognized the gap between the theoretical knowledge that students may have and the practical exposure needed to take informed career decisions. In order to address this dilemma that students inevitably face, the Association organised a Career Week featuring speakers from different fields of law offering guidance on the path ahead.

Each day of the 11-day Career Week was dedicated to the different avenues open for students to explore after law school. The themes ranged from careers in litigation, Indian and international law firms, in-house counsel, judiciary and civil services to non-legal careers, higher studies/academia, research & policy and insurance. Each session had 2-4 alumni members speaking on the relevant fields and was moderated by one member of the Executive Committee of NLU Jodhpur.

Speaking to Bar & Bench, member of the Alumni Association Arjun Rao attributed the inception of the program to the encouragement and support received from Assistant Professor and Director of the Students Career Counselling & Placements Bureau at NLU Jodhpur Dr Manoj Kuman Singh, Registrar Neha Giri and Vice-Chancellor Poonam Saxena. He also acknowledged the efforts of all members of the Association who proactively chipped in.

Secretary of the Association Shohit Chaudhry added,

“Most students and recent graduates from NLUJ are interested in giving either the judiciary exams or the civil services exams, so we’ve created 2 separate groups for students and fresh graduates to keep in touch with alumni who have already cleared these exams for their inputs and insights.”

Treasurer of the Association Arpit Gupta said,

“This has allowed students to get first hand information from people who they may otherwise not have access to - that's largely the objective we wished to achieve."

The NLUJ Alumni Association also recently conducted a Capsule Style Training Program for capacity building for judges in Bhutan. This was done in collaboration with Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) and the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
