Course Objectives

  • To give students a brief overview of theories of human rights.

  • To give a thorough understanding of the international legal framework as well as institutional framework for the protection and promotion of human rights.

  • To give a brief overview of the regional mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a good understanding of the theoretical foundations and the concept of human rights.

  2. Display a good understanding of the nature and scope of international human rights law and the UN Charter and Treaty based human rights machinery.

  3. Demonstrate a good understanding of the practical application of international human rights law to specific human rights problems.

  4. Analyse complex human rights problems and apply relevant provisions of international human rights law to a hypothetical situation/case study and a theoretical knowledge of the underpinnings of the international human rights systems, its operation and issues associates with its implementation.

Course Duration: 15 weeks, 45 hours for 4 credit course including e- Content, reading reference material, discussion forum posting and assignment.
