Lex Consult has announced the onboarding of Pramit Mohanty as a Partner to head the Firm's banking and finance practice.
Mohanty is an alumnus of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata.
He has close to two decades of experience in structured finance, private credit, real estate finance, cross-border debt and special situations to the role. He began his career at Trilegal, where he spent close to eight years. His work there covered syndicated lending, structured and high-yield debt, real estate and project finance, and cross-border deals including external commercial borrowings. He then spent more than a decade at Altico Capital leading origination, structuring and documentation on credit transactions across India's major markets, and went on to run the platform's restructuring, enforcement and recovery strategy, giving him a first-hand view of how credit structures hold up through the cycle.
At Lex Consult, Mohanty will advise banks, NBFCs, private credit funds, asset reconstruction companies and special situations investors on private credit and structured lending, real estate finance, restructuring, insolvency and enforcement, distressed debt and stressed-asset acquisitions, and cross-border debt including external commercial borrowings.
Commenting on Mohanty's appointment, Naresh Pareek and Majid Afsar Siddiqi, Partners at Lex Consult, said,
"When we set out to build Lex Consult, the idea was never to grow for the sake of size, but to bring in people who share our ambition and add a dimension we didn't already have.
Pramit has sat on the fund side for over a decade, which means he has advised on structuring a credit transaction, and he has also lived through what happens when one goes wrong and negotiated his way out of it. That combination of origination judgment and workout experience is hard to find, and it's exactly what our banking and finance, private credit and special situations clients need as this market gets more complex. We're delighted to have him on board as a partner."
On joining Lex Consult, Mohanty said,
"Over the last eighteen years, I've worked on both sides of the credit cycle, first in private practice, and then for over a decade in-house at a real estate credit platform, on some genuinely complex financing and stressed-asset transactions. The in-house stint taught me to think like a business first and a lawyer second, and I'm excited to bring that fund-side judgment back into private practice for a wider set of clients. What drew me to Lex Consult specifically is the platform Naresh, Majid and the team have built, the calibre of the work, the sectors they're already active in, and the ambition to keep growing without losing what makes the firm distinctive. This is a fast shifting financing landscape that’s seeing a private credit boom, a widening range of alternative credit structures, and an insolvency regime that is maturing and increasingly amended along more market-oriented lines. It is an exciting time to be building out a banking and finance practice in India, and I'm looking forward to doing that here."
The partnership structuring was facilitated by Legal League Consulting, comprising Founder, Chairman and Managing Director Bithika Anand; CEO Nipun K Bhatiaa; and Principal Consultant Tejas Khurana.
