Independence movement activist, author and former Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Chandrashekhar Dharmadhikari, passed away today at the age of 91.

After obtaining his law degree from the Nagpur University College of Law, Justice Dharmadhikari enrolled as an Advocate in 1956 at the Nagpur High Court, 1958 at the Bombay High Court and 1959 at the Supreme Court.

During his years of legal practice, he has served as an Assistant Government Pleader and a Government Pleader. In July 1972, he was appointed an additional judge of the Bombay High Court. His appointment was made permanent in November the same year. He later went on to serve as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court. He retired in 1989.

After his retirement, between 1991 and 1992, he also sat as the Chairman of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal. 

He is also known for his participation in the Quit India movement in 1942 at the age of 14. He has authored over 20 books touching upon the Indian Constitution and MK Gandhi. Among the various awards and honours bestowed upon is the Padma Bhushan, which he was conferred in 2003.

He is survived by one daughter and two sons. One of his sons, SC Dharmadikari is a judge of the Bombay High Court. His other son, Ashutosh is an advocate. 

His last rites will reportedly be performed at the Ambazari Ghat crematorium later today.
