National Law School of India University (NLSIU) will hold its 34th convocation on October 17, sources reveal.

The University's Executive Council and General Council approved the new date on Wednesday.

As per sources, the governing bodies resolved that all graduating students will be formally conferred their degrees, in person or in absentia, on October 17. Graduating students can intimate their choice of receiving their degree in person or in absentia by filling up a form.

Originally scheduled for September 12, the ceremony was cancelled by NLSIU citing "unavoidable circumstances".

It later emerged that it was called off after graduating students rejected a demand to publicly invite Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. This, after more than 700 current and former NLSIU students objected to the CJI and Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra attending the convocation.

The statement of objection followed BCI's August 13 decisions to halt and, within hours, restore enrolment for NALSAR's graduating batch for objecting to CJI Surya Kant's proposed presence at their convocation.

CJI Kant, as Chancellor of NLSIU, later met the students to understand their position. After the meeting, batches were asked to vote on whether they would attend a convocation with the CJI present, without protest or disruption. Students were also assured that Mishra would not attend the function. The vote, held on August 23, showed majority support for that arrangement given that the alternative was cancellation.

However, 2 days later, the terms changed. On August 25, the batches were told that they would also need to issue a public statement inviting the CJI. Since an agreement could not be reached on that, the convocation for the graduating batch was cancelled.
