It would appear that moving to a completely online platform is not the only change being made in next year’s edition of the Common Law Admission Test. As per this report in the Times of India, the 2015 entrance examination may be offered in Hindi along with English. This will be the first time such an initiative has been taken.
The entrance examination, to be held in May this year, is being conducted by the Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University. Speaking to TOI, RMLNLU’s vice chancellor, Dr. Gurdip Singh said that,
Since the test is being conducted by a UP university, it is assumed that more students from the state will take the test, so we have proposed to state the English questions in the paper in Hindi too.
This proposal shall become a reality only if the CLAT Core Committee approves.
In an earlier interview with Bar & Bench, Singh had also revealed his plans to move the entrance examination completely online.
It will be interesting to see whether the proposal is accepted and if so, whether it will lead to a higher number of applicants.
Since its inception in 2008, the entrance examination has seen its fair share of critics. NALSAR University’s vice chancellor Prof. Faizan Mustafa, for instance, has sought the establishment of a permanent CLAT body. On the other hand, Prof. Paramjit Jaswal who heads RGNUL in Patiala, has said that one’s medium of instruction need not necessarily act as a barrier.
