Collegium recommends Justices Aniruddha Bose and AS Bopanna for elevation to Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Collegium, on Friday, recommended Justice Aniruddha Bose of the Jharkhand High Court and Justice AS Bopanna of the Gauhati High Court for elevation to the Supreme Court.

Justice Bose stands at the all India seniority of Sl no. 12 in the combined seniority list of all India Judges while Justice Bopanna stands at Sl no. 36. The Collegium resolution states that after due deliberation and discussion and having taken into consideration various factors such as merit, seniority as well as the desirability of representation on the Supreme Court Bench, these two names have been recommended to fill two of the existing four vacancies in the Supreme Court.

“While recommending the names of Mr. Justices Aniruddha Bose and A.S. Bopanna, the Collegium has taken into consideration, apart from their merit and integrity, combined seniority on all-India basis of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts. The Collegium has also kept in mind the desirability of giving due representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court, as far as possible, to all the High Courts.”

Justice Bose whose parent High Court is Calcutta, was appointed as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court in August 2018. Justice Bopanna was elevated as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court in October 2018 and his parent High Court is Karnataka.
