A Delhi court on Tuesday sought a response from Delhi Police reply on an anticipatory bail plea filed by Congress Member of Parliament (MP) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor A Bimol Akoijam in connection with the sexual harassment case against him.

Several students have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Akoijam, pursuant to which the Delhi Police registered a first information report (FIR) for offences of sexual harassment under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Special Judge Digvinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts heard Akoijam's anticipatory bail plea today and sought the police's reply.

Judge Singh said that no action will be taken against A Bimol Akoijam till November 5, when the matter will be heard next.

The Court also said the investigating officer must appear in Court on the next date of hearing.

Akoijam's counsel told the Court today that he received transit anticipatory bail from a court in Manipur, which the Patiala House Court extended on October 29.

The counsel also told the Court that he had joined the probe and has been cooperating.

Earlier, Akoijam was dismissed from JNU with immediate effect on October 9, following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment.

The Congress MP had been associated with JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences.

On November 2, the Delhi High Court stayed his termination from service after he challenged the university's action.

Akoijam has denied the allegations levelled against him. He has maintained that the allegations are politically motivated.
