The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) order removing Congress Lok Sabha MP and JNU professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from service.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani passed the interim order after Akoijam told the Court that no notice was issued to him before the decision was taken.

The Court has also issued notice to JNU on Akoijam's plea challenging his termination.

The case will be heard next in January 2027

Akoijam was dismissed from the JNU with immediate effect on October 9, following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment.

The Congress MP had been associated with JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences.

The university’s internal committee conducted an inquiry after complaints were filed by several women students.

Based on its findings, the committee recommended a major penalty, following which the JNU administration dismissed Akoijam.

Akoijam has denied the allegations, describing the proceedings as politically motivated and alleging procedural lapses.

Notably, the Delhi Police has registered an FIR against him in connection with the allegations, and the investigation is underway.

Advocate Moirangthem Gunedhor Singh argued the case for Akoijam. Advocates David Ahongsangbam, Hijam Chandrakumar and Ashlikumar Athokpam also appeared for the Congress MP.
