District Legal Services Authority grants Rs 2 Lakh to Rewari Gang Rape survivor

Taking note of the various media reports regarding the Rewari gang rape of a 19-year-old student, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority at Narnaul, Vivek Yadav yesterday met the survivor and handed over a cheque of Rs 2 Lakh under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013.

The woman was abducted and gang-raped in Rewari district, Kanina region on Wednesday while on her way to a coaching class. Three persons have been named as accused in the case so far. The woman is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in Rewari. Medical examination at the hospital has confirmed sexual assault in the case. The case has also been taken up suo motu by the National Commission for Women.

The amount given yesterday by the District Legal Services Authority is meant to meet the medical and other needs of the victim. The District Legal Service Authority will also provide legal assistance to the survivor and her family.

This assistance is given under the supervision of Ajay Kumar Mittal, judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman of the Haryana State Legal Services Authority, Panchkula.

As noted by Chief Judicial Magistrate, Vivek Yadav, the first priority is to provide medical and legal assistance for the survivor.

To this end, Judge Yadav has informed that a panel of two advocates has been given the responsibility of rendering further assistance in the matter to the survivor and her family. Considering the major shock which the woman would be going through, the two-member team is tasked with ensuring counseling services for the survivor besides legal assistance.

He informed that under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme, there is a provision for immediate interim relief to victims. The remaining assistance is given after the decision in the case.
