Former Chief justice of India Justice AS Anand passes away

Former Chief Justice of India AS Anand passed away at about 9 am this morning while being driven to a Noida hospital.

The 81 one year old Justice Anand, had been ailing for some time and had been discharged from a Saket hospital after being treated for pneumonia, on November 29, according to former Supreme Court Registrar, RN Nijhawan .

Nijahawan was with the Judge at the time of his death.

Nijhawan, who also served as Justice Anand’s Principal Secretary, during his tenure as Chief Justice of India, between 1998 and 2001, said that the funeral will be on Sunday, December, 3 at the Lodhi road crematorium at 11;30 a.m.

Justice Anand is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Justice Anand, who graduated from the Jammu and Kashmir University in 1958, went on to  receive a doctorate from London University in 1963.

He was appointed as an additional Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court aged just 38 in 1975, and confirmed as a permanent Judge a year later. He served as Chief Justice, of both the Jammu and Kashmir and Madras High Courts, before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 1991.
