Gujarat lawyer Megha Jani withdraws consent to become Gujarat High Court judge

Bar & Bench

Advocate Megha Jani has withdrawn her consent to become a judge of Gujarat High Court, reports The Indian Express.

Jani has written to the Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court and Chief Justice of India informing them of her decision to opt out. The reasons for the same are not clear.

Jani’s name was first recommended by the Gujarat High Court Collegium along with the names of Bhargav Dhirenbhai Karia and Sangeeta Kamalsingh Vishen way back in December 2016.

The Supreme Court Collegium had, however, by a resolution passed in April 2018, decided to defer the recommendation.

Subsequently, in December 2018, the Supreme Court Collegium had decided to clear the same. It stated that after carefully scrutinizing the material on record and considering the observations made by the Department of Justice, the Collegium was of the view that Karia, Jani and Vishen ought to be elevated as High Court judges.

The Central government is yet to notify these appointments.
