JSA promotes 16 to partnership; Makes 2 Equity Partner Elect

Pallavi Saluja

J Sagar Associates (JSA) has promoted sixteen of its lawyers to retained partnership across Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai and Bangalore offices. The firm has also promoted two Retained Partners Vishnu Sudarsan and Varghese Thomas to ‘Equity Partner Elect’. This takes the total number of equity partners to around 24 with Founding Partner Jyoti Sagar retiring yesterday.

Speaking to Bar & Bench, Managing Partner Berjis Desai said,

“We are increasingly following the policy of accelerating the career path to equity partnership very cautiously. In the future, we would like to see more equity partners. The only contraint ofcourse is the 20 partners limit, which hopefully will get abolished once the Companies Bill is passed. If that does not happen then we have no option but to structure our partnership in a suitable manner because they cannot keep on carrying the designation of ‘Equity Partner Elect’ although they are equity partners for all practical purposes. We would like them to sign the partnership deed, which they cannot do untill the law changes”.

Vishnu started his career with JSA and has been with the firm for almost 14 years. His areas of practice include Corporate Commercial and Regulatory & Policy. He also has an extensive Litigation experience and advises clients in formulating Litigation strategies. Varghese has been with the firm for almost 13 years. Prior to that, he worked at Infosys Technologies in Bangalore and Minter Ellison, Australia for a brief period. Varghese focuses on Corporate Commercial, M&A and finance.

The newly promoted partners at the Delhi office include Apoorva Misra, Jyotika Khilnani Guha, Mayank Mishra, Nitin Kala and Poonam Verma. Apoorva, Nitin and Poonam are part of the Regulatory & Policy practice group. Mayank’s core area of interest is Litigation and Dispute Resolution. Jyotika’s practice covers diverse areas of Corporate Commercial law and Projects.

In the Gurgaon office, Akshay Nagpal, Minu Dwivedi, Nitesh Bhasin and Pallavi Puri have been promoted. All four newly promoted partners specialize in Mergers & Acquisitions, Private Equity investments and General Corporate Commercial transactions.

The Mumbai promotions included Mithun Thanks, Jamshed Bhumgara, Kavita Agarwal, Rajesh Pal and Kaushik Mukherjee. Mithun and Jamshed specialize in transactional and advisory work in relation to Mergers & Acquisitions and Joint Ventures and Private Equity. Kavita’s practice area covers Asset Finance (Shipping financing, Aviation financing and Real Estate funding), Project Finance and Corporate Commercial transactions.
