Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India. He is the first person from the North-Eastern States to hold the post.
Justice Gogoi replaces Justice Dipak Misra, who retired from the post yesterday. He will hold office till November 17, 2019.
Born on November 18, 1954, Justice Gogoi was enrolled as an advocate in 1978. He practised in the Gauhati High Court on constitutional, taxation, and company matters. He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001. On September 9, 2010, he was transferred to the Punjab & Haryana High Court. He was appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011. Subsequently, he was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on April 23, 2012.
He was also one of the four judges who held the unprecedented press conference raising apprehensions about the functioning of CJI Dipak Misra on the administrative side.
Justice Gogoi has already stated that he has a plan to try and tackle pendency of cases which has been plaguing the system for some time now.
