Contributions towards alleviating the crisis left behind by the Kerala floods continue to pour in from the legal fraternity. Now, the Madras Bar Association (MBA), as well as members of the Allahabad High Court, have joined in contributing to Kerala’s disaster relief funds.
The MBA, through its Secretary VR Kamalanathan, handed over a cheque worth Rs 20 lakh to the Kerala High Courts Advocates Association.
The decision to contribute the said amount from the MBA trust was taken at an extra ordinary general body meeting held last month by the Association.
In the meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court has also raised a significant amount towards Kerala flood relief funds. Chief Justice of the High Court Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale had convened an administrative committee meeting last month to discuss the issue. Following the Chief Justice’s appeal, judges, officers of the Registry, and other Court employees voluntarily contributed a day’s worth of their salary to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.
The total amount contributed by the judges, the Registry and other Court officers is almost Rs 43 lakh. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association contributed a further amount of Rs 10 lakhs towards the cause. This apart, Senior Advocates of the Court have contributed a cumulative amount of Rs 13.6 lakhs. Out of this, Rs 1 lakh each has been contributed by Senior Advocates Gopal Swarup Chaturvedi and Naveen Sinha.
Moreover, judicial officers and employees of the subordinate judiciary have also contributed about Rs 1.43 crore so far. An additional amount exceeding Rs 20 lakh is also expected to come through from employees and judicial officers of remaining districts. As a result, the High Court expects to raise a total amount exceeding Rs 2 crore towards relief for the Kerala floods.
