Kerala High Court has designated veteran lawyer, P Balasubramanian Menon, who holds the Guinness World record for the longest career as a practising lawyer, as a Senior Advocate, with the development coming ahead of his 100th birthday on October 15.

Following an initiative taken by Kerala High Court Chief Justice Soumen Sen, the designation was approved on Friday to coincide with Menon's 100th birthday.

This might be the first instance of Kerala High Court designating a lawyer practicing before Moffusil courts as a Senior Advocate.

In 2023, Menon entered the Guinness World Records as the longest serving lawyer in the world after completing 73 years and 60 days and continues to hold that record.

In an interview with Bar & Bench following the recognition, Menon had spoken about his long legal journey and continuing commitment to the profession.

Menon, who began his legal career in 1950, has been practising law for over 76 years. He started practising at the Madras High Court, where he trained under the Advocate General Kuttikrishnan Menon.

After two years, he returned to Palakkad and worked under criminal lawyer KS Ramakrishna Iyer.

Although he initially handled criminal cases, an encounter with a judge during a case in Kochi encouraged him to specialise in civil law, which subsequently became his primary area of practice.
