Assistant Professor of Law at the National Law University of Delhi, Anup Surendranath, has been offered the post of Deputy Registrar (Research) at the Supreme Court of India. Speaking to Bar & Bench, Surendranath confirmed that he has accepted the position.
The post comes with the responsibility of institutionalizing research at the Apex Court and also helping the Supreme Court with framing its own internal policies.
The graduate of NALSAR University (Class of ’06), Surendranath went on to complete a BCL at Oxford University, where he was a Felix Scholar. This was followed by an M.Phil (2010) and a D.Phil in law at Oxford (2013).
Surendranath’s appointment, one hopes, could signal the start of greater involvement of academics in the functioning of the Apex Court. One could also argue that the move is a reflection of Chief Justice Lodha’s ambitions to introduce a certain degree of change within his short tenure as Chief Justice of India; he retires in September this year.
Last week, for instance, it was reported that two senior lawyers, Gopal Subramaniam and Rohinton Nariman, have been recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court. The last time such an elevation took place was way back in 1999, when the then Solicitor General for India, Santosh Hegde, was made a Supreme Court judge.
