A PIL urging the Supreme Court to look into the stories of sexual harassment that form a part of the #MeToo movement was filed today by Advocate ML Sharma.

Sharma in his PIL, asked the Court to take suo motu action and to record the statements made by survivors on social media as part of #MeToo movement.

Sharma’s petition sought for the statements made on Twitter to be recorded under Section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and for FIRs and criminal cases to be registered against the alleged harassers.

In his petition, Sharma also prays for fast-track courts to conduct trials of cases of sexual harassment and for authorities to provide a safe platform for survivors to register their complaints while protecting their identity.

While an urgent hearing in the matter was sought by the petitioner, the Court said today that the matter will come up for hearing in due course.
