A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Calcutta High Court seeking a uniform mandate for filing physical pleadings and documents in 75 GSM A4 paper in duplex (back-to-back) format in the High Court and other courts across West Bengal [Akash Sharma v. Registrar General, High Court at Calcutta and Another].

The PIL aims to lower paper consumption, printing services and costs and the physical bulk of court records.

The case is listed for hearing on November 23.

Calcutta High Court on February 22, 2021 had asked its administrative side to consider mandating use of A4 paper with double-side printing for pleadings and filings.

However, the plea filed by advocate Akash Sharma states that further progress of the matter could not be ascertained through publicly available records or notices.

This PIL primarily seeks to determine the outcome of the order dated February 22, 2021 and a fresh consideration of the matter to prescribe a uniform practice of using 75 GSM A4 paper in a duplex-printed format across all courts in the State.
