Third year NLSIU Bangalore student found dead in hostel

Bar & Bench

A third-year student of National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore was found dead in his hostel room on Saturday, reports Deccan Herald.

The student was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on the NLSIU campus.

As per the report, the police were unable to find a suicide note. March 18 has been declared a holiday at NLSIU.

NLSIU alumni have taken the initiative to address the problem of mental illness on campus. As per a message doing the rounds,

“This is at the least the third instance of suicide in the last five years for an institution whose total floating population is no more 550-600 people. This is extraordinarily high and completely unacceptable. While formal Counselling Arrangements ought to be seriously developed so that specific instances of aggravated mental illness may be treated, we need to develop cultural solutions that engender a more human, integrated, collaborative and empathic attitude in a profession not necessarily known for any of those things. We ought to operate from a place of large-hearted, open-minded abundance rather small-minded, small-hearted scarcity.”
