Centre for Constitutional Law, A Panel Discussion on "Feminist Constitutionalism" by Dr. Veena Roshan Jose

The Centre for Constitutional Law is a student-run organization, which seeks to work towards sparking an interest in the legal fraternity about the crucial role of constitutional law. Endeavoring through its activities, the centre desires to fulfill the mission of spreading awareness and educating the public about the subject and its significance.

About the DNLU

The Madhya Pradesh Dharmashastra National Law University has been established by the Madhya Pradesh Dharmashastra National Law University Ordinance, 2018. The University has been alloted 120 acres of land in the lush green surroundings at Village Pipariya adjacent to the Jabalpur Airport. State of the art infrastructure shall be established with all the modern amenities including residential facilities.

ABOUT THE DISCUSSION

Feminist Constitutionalism is about rethinking constitutional law in a manner that addresses and reflects feminist thought and experience. This term is used in contrast with the approach of constitutional law and gender or constitutional law and feminist theory because it is aspired by scholars to explore the relationship between constitutional law and feminism by examining, challenging, and redefining the very idea of constitutionalism from a feminist perspective.

Constitutional law is foundational to most of the world's legal systems. It shapes fundamental assumptions regarding citizenship, rights, and responsibilities. Feminists who critique law must understand that legal systems cannot really be transformed without addressing their constitutional foundations. Feminist constitutionalism demands that scholars should not only revisit classical topics from new perspectives but, more importantly, pose new questions, introduce new topics, and take responsibility for changing the focus of constitutional discussion and debate.

Prof. Vibhuti Patel, professor at Tata Institute of social science & SNDT women's university, Mumbai.

Prof. (Dr.) P. Ishwara Bhat, Vice-chancellor at Karnataka State Law University, Hubbali.
