Two lawyers among those booked for bribery, compromising integrity of CBI investigation in certain cases

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has implicated two advocates among others for bribing CBI officers in return for favours during CBI investigations..Registering a First Information Report against three of its own officers, a stenographer, two advocates, and three directors of companies presently probed by the CBI, the central investigating agency has alleged that the parties bribed police officers in various cases involving them/parties they represent..The CBI narrates that the case was filed pursuant to information received that these persons were compromising “the integrity of investigation of certain cases on extraneous pecuniary considerations.”.The two advocates in particular, Manohar Malik and Arvind Gupta, who are Delhi-based lawyers, supposedly paid a sum amounting to Rs. 15 lakhs in order to obtain favours for a Chandigarh based company against which a corruption case was being investigated by CBI..The FIR also mentions that the police officers in their turn sought confidential information regarding many of the cases being investigated, upon pecuniary considerations to protect the interests of persons and entities named as accused in the investigations.."The aforesaid facts and circumstances prima facie disclose that these accused persons entered into criminal conspiracy amongst themselves and with unknown others to commit offences of offering / accepting undue advantage, obtaining undue advantage to induce a public servant to perform public duty dishonestly, and abetment of the same," the FIR reads.For these charges, the three police officers, the advocates, and the others involved have been booked under Section section 120 B of the Indian Penal Code (conspiracy) along with Sections 7, 7A, 8 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (Offences pertaining to bribing public servants and abetment of such offences)..Read FIR
