

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction of 49 people in the 2008 Ahmedabad blasts case that left at least 56 dead and hundreds injured, reported PTI.
A Bench of Justice AY Kogje and Justice Samir J Dave also upheld the award of death sentence for 38 of the convicts and life sentence for the remaining 11. The Court rejected all the appeals filed by the convicts.
Around 22 bombs went off in Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008 leaving 56 dead and hundreds injured. The sites of the serial blasts included the Civil and LG hospitals. Indian Mujahideen had claimed responsibility for the blasts.
In 2022, 49 of the 77 accused were convicted in the case by a special court in Ahmedabad. While 38 were sentenced to death, 11 convicted were awarded life imprisonment.
A total of 28 people had been acquitted in the case and one of the accused had turned approver for the prosecution.
