Meera Emmanuel

Accredited journalists can carry mobile phones inside the court rooms of Supreme Court.

According to a notification issued today, Chief Justice Dipak Misra has passed the order allowing accredited journalists to carry their mobile phones on silent mode inside courtrooms.

Assistant Registrar, Sushil Kr Sharma has issued the notification, which states,

It is submitted that the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India vide orders dated 11/05/2018 has been pleased to accede to the request of the accredited Media Persons to allow mobile phones on silent mode inside the Court Rooms.

It has been directed that a cellphone creating any disturbance/nuisance inside the Court Room will be confiscated by the Court Master and handed over to the Additional Registrar (Security).”

Before this, only lawyers were allowed to take mobile phones inside court rooms. Live tweeting of court proceedings by certain lawyers and journalists in lawyers attire had caused disgruntlement among journalists who had raised the issue before the Chief Justice of India.
