The Allahabad High Court recently declined to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that prayed for directions to enact a law for the protection of men from illegal prosecution and harassment by women [Chandrama Vishvakarma v. Union of India and 3 Others]

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Kshitij Shailendra said that except for reference to certain news items, "wholly cursory averments" were made in the petition. Thus, it dismissed the PIL.

"No case is made out in the petition for entertaining the same as public interest litigation. The petition is, therefore, dismissed," the Court said in the order passed on September 24.

The Supreme Court had in 2023 declined to entertain a PIL seeking the creation of a National Commission for Men to look into suicides among married men.

In a similar development, after the suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, a PIL was filed before the Supreme Court alleging misuse of dowry and domestic violence laws against men and seeking guidelines to prevent misuse of such laws.

Advocate AK Maurya represented the petitioner.

Advocates Jagdish Pathak and Shiv Kumar Pal appeared for the respondents.
