"Losing one of the lions that guarded judiciary:" CJI NV Ramana, Bar pay tribute to Justice Rohinton Nariman on his retirement

On his last day as a judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Rohinton Nariman was showered with praise and tributes from members of the Bar..In line with tradition, Justice Nariman sat on the Bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, and also comprising Justice Surya Kant..Solicitor General Tushar Mehta led the tributes, saying,"The first-ever counsel I briefed in the Supreme Court was Justice RF Nariman...Be it comparative study of religions, Constitutions or whichever subject, his Lordship's exceptional brilliance and integrity will be remembered for centuries to come.".Senior Advocate and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Vikas Singh was next. He said,"To be here as a President of the Bar when Justice Nariman is there is a privilege. We should be grateful to (former CJI) Justice RM Lodha, who recommended the name of Justice Nariman. Seven years tenure is not enough. His tenure has brought glory...".I feel like I am losing one of the lions that guarded the judicial institution.Chief Justice of India NV Ramana .President of the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA), Shivaji Jadhav said,"Justice Nariman, a Parsi priest and an LL.M. graduate from Harvard will be keenly missed. At the age of 37, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by then Chief Justice Venkatachaliah and rules were amended to make him senior.Justice Nariman has delivered more than 500 reported judgments and it is known that once the verdict was reserved, he did not take more than two or three days to dictate the judgment as he was very sharp.".Former SCBA President, Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave noted,"He has served the country and Constitution absolutely brilliantly. Justice Nariman was an absolute symbol of a very fair and compassionate judge who was equally kind to all lawyers and very encouraging to the young members. I am sure younger lawyers have learnt a lot from justice Nariman..."."We thank him from the Supreme Court cafeteria group where he always joined us for coffee," Senior Advocate Siddharth Dave added..Senior Advocate KV Viswanathan said,"Justice Nariman has adorned the precincts of the Bar for more than 42 years. As a judge, your contribution is enormous and brought out what was best in the Bar... your contribution can be outshone by your own writing post retirement..."."There are five areas where you have set an example. We have seen you as a friend, lawyer, judge, and jurist. You have set an example in all these fields. Whatever you have taken up, you have given your best to it," was Senior Advocate PS Narasimha's tribute to the judge..CJI NV Ramana rounded off the ceremonial bench sitting with the following comments:"He practiced law for 35 years before being elevated to the Bar and was the fifth counsel to be directly elevated to the Bar. As a judge of the Supreme Court, he has disposed of 13,565 cases!"Personally, I am a little overwhelmed at expressing my thoughts. On his retirement, I feel like I am losing one of the lions that guarded the judicial institution; one of the strong pillars of the contemporary Judicial System. He is a man of principles and is committed to what is rightI look forward to his continued contribution to his immense contribution to the field of law.".The formal farewell ceremony for Justice Nariman will be held at the Supreme Court lawns today at 3:30 PM.[Read reference by CJI Ramana]
