The Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim has formulated a scheme to provide financial assistance to lawyers in view of the total lockdown imposed throughout the country on account of COVID-19.
A press release issued in this regard intimates that the scheme was formulated in a meeting held on April 23, given that during the lockdown all advocates may not have the social security to get by. It was noted that, "They are professionals and not salaried employees. Most of the Advocates are not financially sound and they are maintaining their livelihood by means of daily earnings.”
The scheme has been promulgated to help out Advocates who have been rendered without work due to restricted functioning of the courts and consequently are facing extreme financial hardships.
Under the scheme, a lawyer enrolled with the Bar Council, who is in need of financial assistance, may be provided with the same, provided that:
he is in active practice;
he does not have any other source of income and;
his total savings do not exceed Rs. 30,000 as on March 15, 2020.
It is further added that the applications are to sent to the Chairman of the Council either by way of e-mail on "email@example.com" or in person or by speed post/ registered post/courier on or before May 7, 2020.
