Calcutta HC orders police to trace, apprehend cricketer Abishek Porel accused of rape on promise of marriage

The Calcutta High Court recently ordered the police to apprehend Delhi Capitals cricketer Abhishek Porel and seize his electronic devices to prevent dissemination of photographs of a woman who has accused him of rape. 

In an order passed on July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya said Porel and one another accused remain at large despite efforts by the police to arrest them.

The Court directed the police to continue their efforts to trace him and apprehend him.

“Concerned police authorities are directed to continue with their endeavour to apprehend respondent nos.6 & 7 and to make seizure of devices so obnoxious data stored therein shall not be further disseminated,” the Court ordered. 

It asked the police to file a report before Court on August 14 about steps taken to comply with the order. The order was passed on a petition moved by the complainant for a proper investigation into the matter and seizure of the devices allegedly containing intimate pictures of the woman.

A case was registered against Porel last month at Mogra police station alleging that he established a physical relationship with the complainant on the promise of marriage and frequently recorded their intimate moments. 

However, the complainant said that Porel was also involved with other women. She also accused him of physical and mental abuse, including violent sexual acts against her will.

Advocates Ranadev Sengupta, Akash Ganguly and Amaan Deep Gupta represented the complainant.
