Central government notifies transfer of Delhi High Court Justices Arun Monga and Tara Vitasta Ganju

The Central government on Tuesday notified the transfer of Delhi High Court Justices Tara Vitasta Ganju and Arun Monga to Karnataka and Rajasthan High Courts respectively.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justices Ganju and Monga's transfers in August this year.

The Collegium's recommendation to transfer Justice Ganju was met with strong opposition from the High Court bar and senior lawyers.

The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA), the DHCBA women lawyers, as well as several other members of the bar, had written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai voicing their opposition to Justice Ganju's transfer.

Born in 1971, Justice Ganju obtained her Bachelor of Law degree in 1995 from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. She later continued her education in law in the United Kingdom, receiving the British Chevening scholarship in 1999.

In legal practice since 1995, she worked primarily before the High Court. She advised and undertook matters in a wide range of legal areas including property, inheritance law, civil laws, arbitration, company, criminal and intellectual property litigation under the original, appellate and writ jurisdictions of the courts at Delhi and its neighbouring jurisdictions.

She was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on May 18, 2022.

Interestingly, Justice Monga was transferred from the Rajasthan High Court to the Delhi High Court only in July.

Justice Monga had his schooling in Punjab where his father was a judicial officer. He did B.Sc from DAV College, Chandigarh with first division. He studied law at Panjab University, Chandigarh. While studying law, he was teaching Chemistry at a school at Chandigarh.

He started law practice in 1991. He then shifted practice to Delhi in 1997-98, where he practiced for 20 years, till he was sworn in as judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court in October, 2018. 

He was transferred to Rajasthan High Court and took oath on November 1 in 2023. 

From there, he was transferred to Delhi.
