The Ministry of Law & Justice has decided that the Advocates (Amendment) Bill 2025, which proposes to makes changes to the Advocates Act, will be revised and fresh public consultation will be held with regard to the changes..The same was conveyed by the Union Law Ministry to the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday.The decision has come at a time when bar bodies and lawyers across the country have been protesting against the Advocates (Amendment) Bill 2025 in its current form."Considering the number of suggestions and concerns received, it has decided to conclude the consultation process now. Based on the feedback received, the draft bill as revised will be processed afresh for consultation with stakeholders," the Law Ministry said in its communication to BCI.In light of the same, the BCI has now appealed to the lawyers and bar bodies to to refrain from further protests and strikes. In a press release, the BCI stated that the Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal has assured that all the contentious issues would be thoroughly examined before finalising the Bill.“In view of the latest development and stand of the Government, the Bar Council of India requests all those Bar Associations who have given the call of abstentions, to resume the Court Works from Monday, the 24th February, 2025,” the BCI stated. The contentious Bill was made available for public consultation on February 13 on the website of Department of Legal Affairs.
