CJI Dattu directs ED to continue instructing “amicus” KKV in 2G cases

Chief Justice of India, HL Dattu today directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to continue instructing KK Venugopal in the cases related to 2G scam, reports NDTV. The hearing today pertained to the Aircel Maxis case in which BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has sought chargesheeting of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram for his role in grant of FIPB approval for the deal.

The ED had recently removed KK Venugopal from his responsibility as Special Counsel for them in the 2G related cases in Supreme Court.

When the matter was taken up today Justice Dattu said that the Court wanted KK Venugopal’s assistance in the matter.

“We need you to assist us. We will tell them. We know how to tell them….since the matter is in the final stage, can you not assist us?, asked Justice Dattu.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan representing NGO Centre for PIL and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy agreed with the Court’s view that Venugopal should continue.

Justice Dattu proceeded to direct that Venugopal would assist the court as amicus curiae and the ED and the CBI will continue to provide him all documents and brief him with regard to the investigation.

“We request Shri K K Venugopal, the respected senior counsel, to continue to assist us in the matter………….. We direct the CBI and the ED to continue instructing Venugopal.”

The CBI and ED filed their status reports today in sealed covers. The case will now be taken up on September 23.
