The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended that three additional judges of the Bombay High Court be confirmed as permanent High Court judges. .The decision was taken at a meeting of the Collegium held on February 20 (Thursday). According to this statement, the following judges have been recommended to be made permanent High Court judges:i) Justice Shailesh Pramod Brahme,ii) Justice Firdosh Phiroze Pooniwalla, and (iii) Justice Jitendra Shantilal Jain. .The Collegium also informed that it has recommended that Justice Manjusha Ajay Deshpande's term as an additional judge be renewed for one more year."The Supreme Court Collegium has resolved to recommend that Smt. Justice Manjusha Ajay Deshpande, Additional Judge, be appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court of Bombay for a fresh term of one year," the statement said..Justices Brahme, Pooniwalla and Jain were sworn into office as additional judges of the Bombay High Court in June 2023. They were to serve as additional judges for a two year period. .Interestingly, while recommending their appointment back in 2023, the Collegium had overruled an objection raised by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) with regard to the candidature of Firdosh Phiroze Pooniwalla as a judge. The IB had objected to the candidature of Pooniwalla by flagging an article written by an advocate under whom Pooniwalla used to work as a junior. The said article was written in 2020 expressing concerns over the alleged lack of freedom of speech/expression in the country in the last 5-6 years. The Collegium in its resolution said that the views expressed by a former senior of Pooniwalla have no bearing on Pooniwalla's own competence, ability or credentials for appointment as a judge of the High Court..Justice Manjusha A Deshpande was appointed as an additional judge for two year period in August 2023. On July 18, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had recommended her appointment as a judge of the Bombay High Court, after noting that Deshpande is a competent lawyer well versed in several branches of law, particularly in constitutional and service matters. The recommendation was cleared by the Centre in August that year. She will now serve as an additional judge for one more year.
